Don't forsake your responsibilities

October 15, 2018

“Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry. And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army. And David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the ranks and went and greeted his brothers.” 1 Samuel‬ ‭17:19-22‬ ‭ESV‬‬

This weeks devotional continues with the theme of responsibility. It would appear that in 2018, people are more ambitious than ever before. If we take social media for examples, one cannot deny that it is bursting with individuals trying to promote their services. For some it is a part-time hustle, for others it’s their main career, whilst for others it’s their name and lifestyle. In the midst of these aspirations a single word often haunts the corridors of their ambition, responsibility.

We often focus on David the King or David the giant Slayer. However, we neglect the power of his story, if he don't recognise the responsibility he showed in his early years. By Chapter 17 of 1 Samuel, David had already been anointed as Saul’s heir, yet remained in a location of humility, out in the field. It would have been easy for David to become nonchalant with his duties and instead day dream about his future kingdom. Rather, we see him leave the sheep in the hands of another and the same with his carriage. When David moved on to the next chapter in his life, he didn’t neglect his current or previous duties, he ensured his responsibilities were covered.

Ambition and aspirations can be positive, but should not be at the detriment of what you are currently doing. David was prepared for kingship by working with sheep. Your current situation is preparing you for your future, don’t neglect it, you are responsible for each part of the journey God has called you to take.
