Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13 ESV In today’s Lamp and Light entry, I want to talk about the benefits of spending time with Jesus. As Christians, we know that spending time with our Lord and Saviour is something we ought to do, but if we’re honest and if you’re anything like me, it’s probably something you do not do often enough.
In today’s reading, we clearly see the Kingdom benefits of spending time with Jesus. Today’s story is taken from the book of Acts, where we find the great testimonies of the success and persecution of the early Church. In today’s passage, we read of Peter and John being brought before the Jewish council due to their preaching of Christ. What fascinates me about this story is that despite all of their efforts, the council were not able to bring an accusation against Peter and John. Why? Because with their own eyes, the council saw the positive works of both Apostles (Acts 4:7 & 7). This observation leads them to ask “And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, "By what power or by what name did you do this?"” Acts 4:7 ESV. To which Peter replies it is indeed Jesus Christ who is the name and the power which he and John were working in. The same Jesus whom ironically was rejected, by the same religious leaders. It is at this point we come to our key verse, which outlines to me and I hope also to you some of the key benefits of spending time with Jesus. 1. Spending time with Jesus gives us supernatural boldness - verse 13 begins by stating that the council saw the boldness of Peter and John. Peter confidently spoke about Jesus as the power and authority which allowed him and John to operate 2. Spending time with Jesus will cause you to exceed societies expectation of you and leave people surprised - the text calls Peter and John uneducated and common. No one expected that they would be able to accomplish what they did, because of their lack of knowledge and status 3. Spending time with Jesus will bring forth evidence that will close the mouths of those who oppose you - verse 14 states that as the healed man was standing right in front of the council with Peter and John, therefore they could not bring a charge against them. 4. Most of all, spending time with Jesus will act as a testimony of the benefits of spending time with our Lord, that causes others to do the same. It is my prayer that as you make a commitment to spend more time with Jesus in 2019, you will receive supernatural boldness, you will exceed every earthly expectation of you and that you will bring forth evidence of the glory of God in your life that will cause those who oppose you to be silent and furthermore, cause them to want to spend time with Jesus themselves.
