“But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.” 2 Corinthians 4:7-10 ESV
In today’s reading Paul is reminding the Church in Corinth about the importance of living in the light of the gospel. Paul starts verse 4 by encouraging the Corinthians to not lose heart as they have acquired the gospel through the mercies of God, therefore they should proclaim the name of the Lord Jesus with confidence, knowing that the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ has shone on their hearts.
In verse 7, Paul refers to this knowledge as a treasure which demonstrates that all power belongs to God and not to ourselves and since this is the case, even though we are afflicted, perplexed and persecuted we are still victorious due to the treasure we have, which is the knowledge of the power that comes with a belief in the glory of the birth, life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In light of this, my questions for you today are; In what areas of your life are you currently feeling afflicted, perplexed and persecuted? Perhaps it’s your current job situation or maybe a relationship with a friend or family member. It even could be related more specifically to your faith journey. Maybe you are perplexed by some of the things you are currently going through and are wondering how is it possible for a loving God to allow to endure some of your current situations and circumstances. My second question, which is related to my first is; How can your knowledge of the life and works of Jesus be manifested in any of the areas of your life which are causing you to feel afflicted, perplexed and persecuted? What is it you need to do or change in order for the manifestation of the glory of Christ to shine its light on your current situations?
It is my prayer, that from this day onward, you would yield to the encouragement of our brother Paul and that when you feel like the world is against you or you feel like giving up, you will be reminded of the treasure you have which is the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, which comes with the ability to manifest Jesus’s power and presence in our own bodies.
Let us make a conscious effort and commitment to live in the power and authority of this treasure.
